Senior Cup History

In Chicago it seemed softball players in the gay leagues played only until their hair turned grey or the dye job didn’t fool the guys or potential boyfriends.  You wouldn’t see them much, as they stayed away from the scene or moved to Minneapolis, Florida or the west coast.  Talk of retired players joining to form a team always seemed to surface in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  But no one wanted to get this process started, no one took charge.

Then in October 1998 Peter Meyer was sitting in a boys-town bar in Chicago sipping on his second beer, watching football when friend /teammate, Gary Vien, strolled in to share a pitcher.  Peter had folders and papers spread out among pretzels and beer.  After a minute to gather his thoughts, Peter presented his idea.  Bring players and former players 40 years of age and older to form teams to play in a tournament, specific to the aging athletes, where the competition could begin again on a more even field.  Athletes who had not played in years or were to intimidated by the younger guys all would be welcome.  Sharing past memories and meeting new people while playing a friendly game of softball was his idea.

As Gary agreed enthusiastically, Bob Nicholson, player and umpire and Doug Malm, premier player walked in just in time to raise their glasses to toast the birth of the first senior cup.

A presentation of this idea at the NAGAAA meetings in the winter of 1999 showed support for the plan.

In September of 2000 the first Senior Cup consisting of gay and lesbians 40 years of age and older began.  Despite a few showers players and teams from Boston, Minneapolis,  St. Louis, Toronto, Atlanta and Chicago competed.  Players were thrilled and spread the word.  Every year since the word continues to spread to more and more eligible players.  In 2005, our 6th tournament played host to 19 teams from across the North American continent. The mission that started in 1998, of realizing a tourney field of 16 teams, has come to reality.
